Participants can register for one session per time slot, with exception of Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness Survival sessions which will encompass all three Friday sessions.

Hiking Beginner Level:

If you want more than a daily walk in the neighborhood, hiking 101 will introduce the how-tos of planning and preparing for adventure hiking. The instructor will review how to dress for changing weather conditions, how to plan and pack the correct amount of water, snacks and supplies for day hikes, how to pick hiking trails that compliment your ability, and how to read trail maps. You will also learn some basic first aid tips and other essentials to pack. This workshop will boost your confidence with hiking trail knowledge and skills.

Hiking Intermediate Level:

So, you and friends have ventured out on short trail hikes, but now you want more of a challenge. This workshop will review selecting trails that are full day experiences and review how to plan for such a hike. There will be an overview on proper dress, equipment, supplies and food and much more to assure for a successful hike.

Hiking Advanced Level:

This workshop will discuss how to plan for a thru hike or extended day hikes on the trail. It will address endurance along with what needs to be in a backpack. This workshop is for those looking to explore and hike the backcountry.

Backpacking the Backcountry:

What’s next for a seasoned day hiker? We recommend backpacking! This how-to workshop will help you plan overnight and weekend trips, and teach you what to carry in a backpack, how to pack it (yes, there is a strategy that can make or break your trip!), and how to select appropriate gear. The session will cover advanced hiking topics in more depth and answer some crucial questions: How many miles are reasonable to walk in a day? How heavy should a backpack be? What’s involved in mapping out a backpacking trip for up to three days? If you want to attend the backpacking excursion on Saturday, this session is required.

Leave No Trace:

Stewardship on trails is a priority for all trail users. This session teaches the seven principles of “Leave No Trace” (obvious examples—carry out trash and don’t mess with wildlife). We hope you will follow these principles and be a responsible trail user. For those interested, this session can start you on the path to Leave No Trace certification.

Campfire Cooking:

Cooking on a campfire can be so much more rewarding—and romantic—if you know what you’re doing. This workshop covers starting the fire and controlling the heat; choosing and using cookware and equipment; prepping, cooking and storing foods; and the all important question, what to cook? The instructor will share recipes and food cooked over an open fire.

Introduction to Kayaking:

Paddling blueway trails is a terrific way to enjoy the great outdoors, especially in the summer heat. Instructors will address boats and essential equipment, personal gear, safety, and paddling strokes and proper techniques, including how to get in and out of a tippy kayak. You’ll also learn the essentials of planning a kayak excursion. Whether you’re out for a day trip or on a bucket-list expedition, you will appreciate this workshop!

Introduction to Mountain Biking:

Friday sessions will take place on location at Table Rock and will teach the fundamentals of mountain bike adventuring, with emphasis on riding safely while enjoying the exhilaration of flying on a bicycle. The Saturday excursion will introduce you to the hottest new mountain bike trail experience — Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park. This workshop will introduce you to the Stumphouse MBP trail system and jump-start your enthusiasm for mountain biking.

Introduction to Trail Running:

Tired of running on pavement along busy streets? Trail running provides a wonderful way to enjoy the soothing power of nature while exercising. Instructors will share the secrets behind a successful transition from paved surfaces to natural trails as they cover the seven steps of trail running. These include physical fitness, proper gear, and how to avoid obstacles on the trail.

Introduction to Fly Fishing:

Teach a woman to fish and she will hike with a purpose to a stream, lake or ocean and pull out her lightweight, flexible fly rod. The workshop will teach the art of 10-to-2 casting, as well as the technical details of reels, rods, fly lines, tippets and backing, and much more. This workshop is a sure hook for a lifetime sport.

Orienteering:

How are your navigational skills. Do you know how to use a compass? When finished with this workshop you will have the confidence to self-navigate. These skills are a must when trails don’t have blazes. Participants will be given a topographical map and navigate from point to point in diverse and unfamiliar terrain.

Combined Survival/First Aid Double Track

Basic First Aid:

The purpose of this course is to help participants identify and eliminate potentially hazardous conditions in their environment, recognize emergencies, and make appropriate decision for first aid.

Solo Southeast Wilderness Survival 1:

Most rescues happen within 72- hours. This introduction to wilderness survival teaches you how to use these critical hours to stabilize your situation and assist in your own rescue. Topics include survival priorities and psychology, essential gear for survival kit, shelter, fire making, water finding and purification, and much more.
